Immigration and Residency

Foreigner Identification Number (NIE)

The NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) is the number assigned to identify you as a foreigner, regardless of your nationality, and it is different from the Spanish national identification number.

The NIE is the first thing you need to obtain when you arrive in Spain.

It is used as a tax identification number, so it is required to buy a property, a vehicle, open a bank account, etc.

EU Citizen Registration Certificate (CUE)

If you are a national of a European Union member country, you can obtain your residence certificate as an EU citizen.

How can I obtain the EU Citizen Registration Certificate?

You must mainly prove that you have been living in Spain for at least 3 months and demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources and health insurance coverage.

Foreigner Identity Card (TIE)

The Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) is issued to people residing in Spain who come from non-EU countries. To obtain it, they must first secure a residence permit for work, studies, or a non-lucrative residence authorization.

There are different ways to obtain this authorization, but once granted, the remaining steps to get the card are simple: first, book an appointment for fingerprinting and submit the application; second, collect the card.

Brexit

British citizens who arrived or arrive in Spain after Brexit must apply for residence authorization under the general rules for non-EU nationals. However, those who were already residents only need to exchange their EU registration certificate (green card) for the TIE.

TIE Renewal

As a general rule, British citizens who were residents before Brexit obtained their first TIE between 2020 and 2021, valid for 5 years. They must now renew it directly, as their residence status is permanent. The new card will be valid for 10 years.

Non-Lucrative Visa

British citizens who wish to move to Spain and become residents without working or investing must apply for a non-lucrative visa in the UK through the Spanish consulate.

Once granted, they must travel to Spain and apply for the TIE as soon as possible, which will be valid for one year.

After that, they must renew their non-lucrative residence authorization from within Spain before obtaining a new card.

The process is similar for other types of visas.
