Citizens from the European Union and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) may drive with their licence while it is valid. Exchanging your licence is therefore entirely voluntary. However, if you come from outside the European Union and the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), your licence is only valid for six months from the date you take up normal residence in Spain. You will therefore be required to exchange your licence if you wish to continue driving in our country.
If you are a resident of Spain and have a valid driving licence issued in a foreign country, you can exchange it for the Spanish equivalent (always handing in the original), provided that there is an agreement with the country of origin of the licence and you meet a series of administrative requirements.
If you have changed your address, it is important to update your details with the Traffic Department (DGT) so that you can receive any notifications related to your vehicle or your dealings with the traffic authorities.
If you are not using your vehicle, do not want to sell it, and/or have taken it to a scrapyard, it is important to deregister it with the DGT ( Traffic office) to avoid future penalties
Vehicle registration is a prerequisite for driving on public roads, so before driving any vehicle you have purchased, whether new or purchased abroad (new or used), it must be registered. It is therefore important to fit number plates before you can drive any motor vehicle, as well as trailers and semi-trailers with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 750 kilograms.
If your vehicle is used and purchased in a third country, you will need
the original vehicle documentation and the Single Administrative Document (SAD) issued by Customs, unless the MOT card shows that the vehicle has been imported.
If your vehicle is used and purchased in the EU, you will need:
Original vehicle documentation and, in addition:
In the case of a sale between private individuals, a sales contract accompanied by a translation and Property Transfer Tax.
If the vehicle is purchased from a dealer in a country other than Spain, an invoice showing the VAT number must be provided.
If the vehicle is purchased from a Spanish dealer, an invoice and a document issued by the tax authorities must be provided, proving that the dealer is registered for that activity during the corresponding financial year.
